Methodology
Forms of Collaboration
School of Music uses various forms of collaboration with teachers.
Working from Your Own Location
If you work from your own location, we can promote your lessons on schoolofmusic.nl. You create your own profile page for this. Additionally, it is also possible to offer lessons at home or via video connection through your profile. For registrations you receive through our site, a commission of 18.4% applies. This means you keep €35.90 if you charge the minimum lesson price of €44* per hour.
* The prices shown are exclusive of VAT.
Working at Our Locations
We have several of our own teaching locations in the Rotterdam region. If you work here, a commission rate of 31.4% applies. This includes the rental of the location and recruitment of students.
Teacher Profile
As a teacher, you have your own account at www.schoolofmusic.nl. Here you can view and edit your student registrations, upload your invoices, and update your profile page. Visitors to schoolofmusic.nl can directly book a trial lesson on your profile page or contact you via the contact form. You can find how to fill out the profile here. Once a trial lesson is booked, you will receive a confirmation email with the contact details of the requester, and you are free to contact the requester in other ways than the contact form.
Trial Lessons
Every new student starts by booking a trial lesson. Trial lessons can be booked at the times listed as available in the availability planner.
If a trial lesson is booked, you will receive an email with the contact details of the student and a text message. A trial lesson can be booked up to 24 hours in advance. For private lessons, the duration of the trial lesson is standard 30 minutes. After booking, the student receives an email with the address and phone number of the teacher.
If you are unexpectedly unavailable at the time of the booking, you can reschedule this in consultation with the student. You do not need to cancel the trial lesson, but do not forget to block it in your lesson schedule. Please note that automatic emails will be sent around the booked time: a reminder email the day before the trial lesson and a registration link after the trial lesson. If you want to cancel the trial lesson, this can be done via the cancellation link in the confirmation email or find the trial lesson in your ‘Registrations’ overview, where there is a button next to the calendar that says ‘Cancel Trial Lesson’. This gives the student the option in their account to book a new trial lesson or request a refund.
Registration
After a trial lesson, the student receives an email asking: ‘What next after the trial lesson with Teacher-X?’ with a link to your registration form. Additionally, the student also receives a review email to evaluate you as a teacher.
On the registration form, the student has the option to subscribe or choose lessons via Prepaid credit. In the case of a subscription, they pay the first 4 weeks in advance plus the registration fee. They only choose a start date here; you need to arrange the time with the student yourself. In the case of prepaid lesson credit, you schedule the lessons in consultation with the student. See also our terms for students.
Subscription vs Prepaid
- A list of advantages and disadvantages will follow soon
Cancellations
For subscriptions, a payment guarantee and a notice period apply. From the moment of registration, the hourly rate by SoM is guaranteed for every scheduled lesson. When someone cancels a subscription or wants to cancel a lesson, a notice period of 4 weeks applies. The student has a payment obligation for every scheduled lesson, regardless of their attendance. If a student is unavailable, you do not need to make up or cancel the lesson unless you decide to make an exception for this. It helps to communicate clearly about the conditions from the start of a registration. School of Music reserves the right to waive the notice period in special cases.
Notice Period in Case of Absence
When the student has been absent for 4 consecutive weeks (with or without notification), we consider this a cancellation from the first missed lesson. Experience shows that people who have been absent for a month, with or without notification, usually do not continue. The 4th missed lesson is then the last lesson day. If someone still wants to continue, they can re-register, where again a prepayment of 4 weeks is required. In special cases, you may also choose not to charge lessons to the student.
Contact Person
As a teacher, you are responsible for coordinating and making agreements with your students. Try to answer your students’ questions as much as possible yourself and ask us if you do not know the answer. If you must refer students, use the contact form on the website. You can also refer the student to the contact form.
Lesson Schedule and Changes
Teacher Unavailability
In case of unavailability, you are responsible for informing your students and arranging a substitute teacher or making up lessons. You must arrange the compensation with a substitute yourself. If you cannot arrange a substitute or make up the lessons in a short time, you must remove the lessons yourself so that they are not invoiced. If you have agreed with a student to reschedule the lesson, it is not necessary to adjust this in the administration.
Student Unavailability
In a subscription, a notice period of one month applies. This applies to both cancellations and the notification of individual lessons. If you want to make an exception to this, you can. Lessons that you do not charge must also be removed by you.
For prepaid lessons, these can be canceled up to 24 hours in advance. Therefore, it is useful to always have agreements confirmed in writing (WhatsApp/sms/email).
Invoicing Students
Students with a subscription receive an invoice for the lesson fees for the following month around the 25th of the month. Changes made before the 25th are automatically included on the invoice. Changes that come in after the 25th will be settled on the next invoice. For example: on January 15, a teacher cancels their lessons for that day. They know they will be unavailable on February 10 and cancel those lessons immediately as well. On January 25, the students receive the invoice for the month of February. On this invoice, the lesson of February 10 is not charged, and the lesson of January 15 is credited.
Holidays and Lesson Schedule
You can set your own holidays up to a month in advance. No lessons will be scheduled during this time, and your availability for trial lessons will be blocked. If you still want to teach during this time, you need to manually add it to the calendar. You can always add or remove individual lessons as long as you have not yet invoiced us for the month in question.
Note: the availability planner is only used to display your availability for trial lessons. Adjustments for invoicing must be made in registrations.
See here how to set your holidays.
Upload Your Invoice
You upload your invoices at the end of each month. You must upload a separate invoice for each month. Payments usually occur on the second Thursday of the month. Invoices are paid within 14 working days at the latest.
Always include your own details and account number, the month you are invoicing, and the invoice number in your invoice. Also, include the names of the students with the number of lessons per student, the total duration, the total amount, and the VAT.
See here how to upload the invoice.
Invoicing Without VAT
If you are not registered with the Chamber of Commerce or if you are using the small business scheme (KOR), you cannot charge VAT on your invoice. In that case, we can turn off the VAT for you. You arrange this in the ‘Account’ section.
Youth Fund Sports & Culture
Minor students can claim a reimbursement from the Youth Fund Sports and Culture of up to €500 per year and a reimbursement of up to €100 for renting an instrument. A grant must be requested by an intermediary such as a teacher or social worker. When an application is pending at the Youth Fund, the intermediary who made the application receives a notification upon approval. The student can then book and register free of charge based on their name and date of birth.
Youth Fund Rotterdam Becomes Sports and Culture Credit
In Rotterdam, starting in April 2026, the Sports and Culture Credit will replace the Youth Fund. This allows you to make a choice every six months from various sports and culture providers. At School of Music, this means that students can spend a credit of €300 every six months. This will be linked to the Rotterdam pass.
